February 1996: The MD sent me to the Opthalgic surgeon. I often have severe headaches and my vision is blurred. During the visit of the Opthalgic surgeon the vision-test reveals that I only see 60%. At the flu-pictures we see inflammations, scarred tissue and protein leakage. The diagnosis is UV-itis. Lung-pictures are taken to see if the inflammations originate there, but my lungs are not the source of the trouble. I get eye-drops. After several months of faithfully using the drops my vision does not improve, and I am always tired. In the fall of 1996 I get diuretics. They make me nauseous, I have mood swings and I have to cry a lot. The dosage is lowered but that does not improve my moods. The headache with which everything started, grows worse. I cannot move my head and shoulders and my eyes continuously produce tears. After the diuretics, a prednisone-injection in the mucous membrane of the eye is the next step. This helps for a short period, my vision improves a little but soon thereafter it becomes worse than before. The inflammation stays and no one knows where it comes from, what is causing this. The MRI-scan of my head does not show anything and in between two flu-pictures were made. The damage of the retina is increasing. We are on the wrong track. We hear that in the UMC a doctor is doing a study of UV-it is in which I can participate. I sign up as experimental test-subject. 50% gets a laser treatment, the remainder a placebo. 6 Months after the treatment I must take eye-drops. Later I am told that the major ingredient of the medication has been prednisone. That explains my depressed feelings and my bloated appearance.
End 1997 I get a severe flu, I almost suffocate. After a scary night our GP prescribes antibiotics and Ventolin. My resistance is totally gone. In the meantime I go back and forth to the ophthalmic surgeon in Leiden. I was in the placebo-group of the research project in the UMC. The vision of my left eye is only 20%.
January 1998: I still have frequent, severe headaches. I give in to my depressions and I cannot bring myself to be positive anymore. I am exhausted and I do not want to be strong anymore. Somehow, we get the phone number of Mauk den Boer. The phone-conversation with him is a revelation. He asks me "funny" things, like do I have cold feet, about my bowel movements, regularity of my periods. And yes, I do have very cold feet and I only go to the toilet once in every four to five days. Mauk den Boer refers me to one of the therapists that are working with his system. We make an appointment right away. I am desperate and eager to try this.
The therapist tries to temper my enthusiasm and asks me to make an inventory of all the vague complaints that I have and that is quite a list. Headache, painful and irregular menstruation, pressure behind the eyes, cold feet, terrible perspiration, fluctuating sugar-levels, fainting and of course my eyes, the main issue. It is such a relief that he makes the effort to look at the whole picture and that he takes the time.
My first five treatments are given within 11 days. I am extremely tired and a splitting headache, but it feels good. After the third treatment my feet are getting warm and after each treatment my urine is as black as coffee. After the fifth treatment quite a few changes for the good have occurred. My bowels got cleansed and I discharge every day. My feet are warm. It is good for the eyes as well. My vision improved by more than 10%. If I were not so tired. At work I can fall asleep while I am standing. My period becomes more irregular than it already was, with a dirty, almost blackish discharge every other week. It seems as if my body has been collecting waste-products and these need to be excreted now through my kidneys, bowels, womb and skin. Step by step my skin feels better, the color of my eyes becomes lighter. I feel positive as well. After the ninth treatment, now from Mauk den Boer, I feel as if I am another person. My thinking is much clearer, I do not look as bloated as before and I capable of focused thoughts. After each treatment I am still very tired. I begin to recognize myself again.
After the 15th treatment my vision is better again and I notice that I can see much more of my surroundings. I realize that you do not miss the things that you cannot see and that one gets used to that. I cannot imagine how tired I was, how deep the depression was and how bad the splitting headaches. After 19 treatments the flu-pictures show that the eye-balls are clear and that there is no protein leakage nor inflammation. My vision is back to 70%. The scar-tissue will prevent complete recovery. I feel extremely well, all the complaints are gone. At the beginning I did not dare to hope for this sort of almost complete recovery!
